OnePlus blocks the refresh rate in some apps on Android 12 (OxygenOS 12)
OnePlus has already released the Android 12-based OxygenOS 12 update for its smartphones including the OnePlus 9, the OnePlus 8T, and the OnePlus 8 Series globally. High refresh rate displays have been one of the best upgrades to our smartphones over the past few years, and OnePlus was actually one of the first to adopt the technology.
The refresh rate above 60Hz is one of the most interesting and pleasant news we have seen in recent years on smartphones, including the of OnePlus. Too bad that for the Chinese company’s devices there are problems in this sense.
In fact, it seems that OnePlus blocks the refresh rate of the display at 60Hz when specific apps are run, probably for a matter of optimizing consumption. This implies potential annoyances, especially on apps where a higher refresh rate than the usual 60 Hz could make a difference, such as in games. Up to Android 11, it was possible to get around the problem on OnePlus devices with third-party apps that ” deceived ” the OxygenOS.

These apps to get around the problem used specific APIs with which it was possible to force the refresh rate to values higher than the canonical 60 Hz. With OxygenOS 12, which arrived with the update to Android 12, this is no longer possible and none of the manual methods seem to work to have a refresh rate above 60 Hz.
At the moment we do not know which are the apps for which OnePlus sets the refresh rate. 9to5Googe asked OnePlus for a comment on the matter, also to understand if the possibility of deciding whether or not to block the refresh rate will return, but the company has not yet responded.
