Chrome has been developing text-to-speech capabilities for Android devices for a few months now, and Google is also set to launch the “Listen to this Page” capability. This TTS is expected to be available on most text-heavy web pages soon.

Once the site has fully loaded, the “listen to this page,”  “translate,” and “add to home screen” features will also appear in the three-dot Chrome for Android overflow. However, a mini-player will also appear at the bottom of the page that can have a progress indicator, play/pause, and close buttons, as well as the page name and site.

Additionally, a new feature allows you to play your speech in 10 seconds with rewind, forward, and playback speeds. This speed provides a variety of controls, including 0.5x, 0.8x, 1x, 1.2x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, and 4x. To use it, you just have to tap on it. In the overflow menu, you can also turn on or off “highlight text and auto scroll” or choose a different voice.

The brand has provided several options in English for the US, UK, Indian, and American counties. These include Ruby (mid-pitch), Warm, River (mid-pitch), Clam, Field (low-pitch), Bright, and Moss (low-pitch). Apart from this, you can also add listen to this page as a toolbar shortcut that will appear next to the Omnibox.

To add it, you have to first go to Settings >Scroll to Advanced > Toolbar shortcut for faster one-tap playback, and it will be added. This is also available in Chrome’s custom tabs. Google is expected to roll out this feature to all devices in the coming months.
