Future computer generations are expected to be referred to as “AI PCs,” and several manufacturers are preparing robust specs to match this shift in the industry. According to recent sources, Microsoft intends to improve the minimum requirements for its Windows 12 operating system, which is expected to be released in 2024. Industry analyst Trendforce reports that the tech giant plans to increase Windows 12’s minimum memory requirement to 16GB, in line with the specifications required for Copilot, its AI assistant, to operate at its best.

Microsoft’s change in hardware requirements is anticipated to specify which computers would be categorized as AI PCs. New system versions have often needed higher minimum requirements. For example, Windows 10 requires 1GB of RAM for 32-bit PCs or 2GB for 64-bit devices, whereas Windows 11 presently requires 4GB of memory.

Windows 10 is still the most popular Microsoft operating system version, even if Windows 11 is gradually gaining traction. The trend indicates that people are more likely to embrace new operating systems when purchasing new ones instead of upgrading their current computers. In light of this, industry analysts predict that the release of Windows 12 may lead computer makers to set 16GB RAM as the new standard for entry-level models to comply with the upgraded operating system and the development.

Several significant industry participants, including Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm, have revealed new systems on a chip (SoCs) intended to power the next wave of artificial intelligence personal computers. For Windows 12, Microsoft has set a performance benchmark of 40 TOPS (trillions of operations per second). Although the existing Intel Meteor Lake CPUs do not match the 34 TOPS requirement, the future Lunar Lake CPUs are anticipated to do so. With 39 TOPS, AMD’s new Zen 4 APUs are close to the standard; nevertheless, compatibility with the upcoming Strix Point Zen 5 APUs is predicted. At 45 TOPS, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chip exceeds the cutoff.

Windows software plays a crucial part in determining the direction of the AI PC sector as different companies carve out their niche in the AI landscape. The upcoming modifications to Windows 12 specs reflect a larger trend in the industry toward more powerful hardware to enable cutting-edge AI capabilities.
