Google Chrome rolls out Chrome 99 for download: What’s New?

When it comes to launching new Chrome versions, Google moves at a breakneck rate. Chrome 99 has already landed in the stable channel, just a few weeks after Chrome 98. This time, there are a lot of improvements behind the hood for developers, but just a few fascinating morsels will have a noticeable influence on normal people.

New features and functions of Google Chrome 99

The next browser release will allow you to delete web apps from the Windows OS settings, just as you can do with normal Win32 softwares. This narrows the gap between native programs and installed progressive web apps, making it even more difficult to discern between the two and prompting us to wonder what the difference is anymore – at least for customers.

Google intends to complete an older experiment begun in Chrome 91: a built-in handwriting recognition API. It will make it easier for developers to construct note-taking or sketching applications because they would no longer have to rely on third-party connections. There are already many APIs available, but they are frequently system-specific, so having a single standard that works across multiple platforms is advantageous. However, for the time being, the handwritten API is only available on desktop Chrome.

Starting with Google Chrome 99, online apps may use your system’s date picker at their discretion via a new class, which might result in a more aesthetically pleasing experience when entering a date on your phone or desktop. The advantage here is that, unlike with a third-party widget from a website, you can depend on your operating system’s familiar date picker.

Google wishes to alter the behavior of content blockers (also known as ad blockers) in browsers. The business claims it is done to decrease the resources consumed by content blockers, but many developers believe Google is pushing the move to make blockers less efficient. In any case, while previously released browser extensions can continue to use the old technique until next year, Google no longer enables new extensions to utilize the so-called Manifest V2 – instead, they must rely on Manifest V3, which only allows for smaller blocklists.

When it comes to downloading things from the web, your browser is the tool to use, but Chrome has gone out of its way in the past to hide easy access to all of your downloads under the upper right overflow menu. However, it appears that the corporation is considering a design similar to Microsoft Edge in the future. A more visible download shortcut might soon appear next to the overflow menu to the right of the address bar. This feature has yet to become the default, and while you could manually enable it in the beta with a lot of fussing, it hasn’t found its way to the default state in Chrome 99.

Chrome 99 improves international date formatting, making it easier for developers to translate content (and presumably clearing up some uncertainty over the old dd/mm/yy and mm/dd/yy quandary).
With this update, Google has addressed a total of 28 security problems, assuring your online safety.
Chrome 99 makes it easy for developers to add dark and light modes by including the option to modify the background colours of a website depending on dark or light theme right inside the web app manifest.
