According to a recent analysis, the most popular smartphone in the world in 2021 was neither an iPhone nor a high-end Android device, but rather Samsung Galaxy A12.

Given its limited variety and enormous popularity, Apple’s entry-level iPhone is generally the phone that most people would believe is the best-selling in any given year. That would be valid in the high-end sector as well, but because Android dominates the budget space, one of the top-selling phones each year is generally a more inexpensive model.

Analyzed reports say Samsung Galaxy A12 is 2021’s most popular smartphone in the world

According to Omdia, the most popular smartphone in 2021 was likely Samsung’s Galaxy A12. This is a smartphone that sells for roughly $180 in the United States, making it one of the cheapest in Samsung’s whole portfolio. There were two additional low-cost Android phones in the top ten, with the Galaxy A02 and which is about $140 price grabbing the tenth slot, and the Xiaomi Redmi 9A taking fifth place with its $80 pricing.

Meanwhile, Apple dominated every other position on the list, with the iPhone 12 being the company’s most popular 2021 product. The iPhone 13 and 11 were close after, with the Pro and Pro Max variants farther down the list. Given that all of Apple’s devices on this list cost $600 or more, it truly emphasizes how Android’s market share is founded in large part on super-affordable products with which Apple just cannot compete.

However, it appears that Android is gaining ground in the high-end market. According to Omdia, foldables had a tremendous year in 2021, with over nine million devices shipped, up 309 percent from the previous year.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of these sales occurred in the second half of 2021, with 89 percent of shipments occurring in the second half. This is due in large part to the success of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and, more specifically, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, with the latter having resonated with customers because of its lower price point and improved durability. At this time, Samsung appears to control 88 percent of the foldable smartphone market.
