A report has confirmed that Wear OS 5 may add support for UWS ahead of the Pixel Watch 3 launch. The brand is trying its best to support GPS, but getting this support for small screens may take a lot of work. The company is trying this option to eliminate the problem of small devices getting lost easily.

Wear OS 5 UWB Support

However, the company started considering developing Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in the device to solve these problems. Still, it was unable to solve the problem, so it opted for location tracking, which allows distance and discretion to be easily obtained. This is why UWB is being added to the device, and its support can be a new achievement for WearOS 5 and Android smartwatches.

UWS stands for Ultra-Wideband, a short-range wireless communication protocol. This technology can also be used to find the distance and direction between objects.

It works through transmitter and navigation, in which the UWS transmitter easily navigates to the location of the UWB receiver with sub-meter precision. It uses a transmitter and receiver instead of the UWS signal so that the receiver gets the exact direction easily.

UWS technology is also being adopted by item tracker manufacturers and car manufacturers because it can also help guide people to the location of their cars.

The only problems with UWS are with Android. This technology may seem a bit difficult to succeed in Google’s Pixel Pro phones and many Samsung Galaxy S and Z Fold devices.

But luckily, we will see this technology coming to Android smartwatches with the upcoming WearOS 5 release, and we can expect it to work better than before. Strings have confirmed this within the settings app. Earlier, this ultra-wideband support was introduced with Android 12 in late 2021.

Along with this, Google released its first smartphone with radio, pixel 6 pro, in the same year, and the very next year, Android’s UWB stack became part of the project’s mainline with Android 13.

However, this UWB support is also based on Android 13 with Wear OS 4. Its strings have revealed that its code base is not different from before, as it still uses the codename Wear OS.

According to a report, Google is preparing to enhance location tracking in the Find My Device app with UWB, allowing you to locate your Moto Tag accurately using Pixel Watch 3.

Note—UWB support can be extremely useful on smartwatches, and we can expect to see other Android smartwatch manufacturers add support for it to Pixel Watch 3 and WearOS 5. However, this new feature will take a long time to arrive.
