ChatGPT is a free-to-use AI system, and one can use it to engage in conversations, gain insights, automate tasks, and many more. Presently, all the brands have a craving for their own AI system. Meanwhile, Samsung on Wednesday announced that it had its own answer to ChatGPT with Gauss, its general AI model. In no time at all, the company followed up by teasing Galaxy AI, which it touts as bringing an AI experience to smartphone devices.

However, for now, Samsung has not disclosed much more about Galaxy AI, and it is also not clear yet whether it will be using the Gauss model or not. Galaxy AI gave advance notice of an “AI experience” in Samsung’s press release, using a hybrid of on-device and cloud-based AI.

At the moment, it is also unclear which devices will be eligible to use Galaxy AI, whether the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 or Galaxy tablet and wearable device, all of which are expected to come early next year. The brand ‘Samsung’ also did not reply instantly to a request for clarity.

Apart from this, it is also not clear yet exactly how Galaxy AI will enhance the users’ experience along with Galaxy smartphone devices, though Samsung did give one example. A feature named AI Live Translate Call will empower those with the latest Galaxy AI phone to use Galaxy AI to translate audio and text in real-time. Noticeably, this feature will be restricted to on-device AI, due to which conversations and translations will not leave the phone.

In the press release, Wonjoon Choi, the head of research and development for Mobile eXperience Business, stated that

Galaxy AI is our most comprehensive intelligence offering to date, and it will change how we think about our phones forever.”

Samsung also did not mention what would authorise the on-device part of the Galaxy AI experience. The brand announced its new Exynos 2400 chips for premium smartphones on Monday, which has on-device AI in addition to other improvements. Also, Samsung’s Galaxy phones do not use Exynos chips; some Galaxy devices are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon silicon.

Samsung is the first phone maker to join chipmakers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek in heralding generative AI on smartphones coming in 2024. However, nothing has been clear yet exactly how Galaxy AI will work on what mechanism or when the brand will introduce it widely.
