Threads Introduces Activity Status Indicators to Engage with Other Users in Real Time
The social media platform Instagram’s Threads is evolving with new features “Activity Status Indicators” that aim to boost user interactions and engagement in real-time. The update introduces an activity status indicator that allows users to see when others are online or engaged in conversations.

The feature is designed to boost the platform’s real-time communication dynamics and provide a more immersive experience for users. However, the feature is also available on other social media apps, such as Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. Through this feature, users on other apps can see the activity status of other users.
Threads platform head Adam Mosseri shared the rollout of the feature on the microblogging platform and mentioned that it had been introduced as a “way to connect with others” in real-time. It helps with real-time conversations when others are online.
This feature has to be enabled, and a green dot will appear next to the user’s profile picture to indicate whether the user is online. To enable it, some steps have to be followed –
- First, go to the profile section on Threads.
- Then, select the Hamburger icon from the top-right corner of the screen.
- Finally, tap on the Privacy and Online Status option.
- There will be some options: Anyone, Followers, Followers you follow and Nobody.
The steps mentioned above can also be followed to turn off this feature. This feature can also be seen in iOS devices in the future. The rollout of the activity status indicator on Instagram’s threads is a strategic move to promote real-time conversations and boost engagement on the platform. This feature will likely give privacy control and ease to everyday users and creators.
