Google Play is expected to include music, movies, TV shows, and non-media content through a new widget on an Android home screen. This new highlight could allow the app to become ‘more than just a store”. It aims to show apps already on the device in a feed that could include a lot of content.
The Play Store can now take over your entire display with a mini navigation rail and a feed of content recommendations. It includes seven automatically grouped categories that show service-specific recommendations, and some of these categories are given below
- Entertainment – In this category, you will get to experience YouTube, TikTok, and Streaming services like Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, and Max. Along with this, you will see “For You” video recommendations and can also get a cross-service “Continue Watching” section, which is not different from Google TV.
- Audible – Apart from music, you can also listen to audiobooks, podcasts, and live radio. You will see “Today’s Top Hits” from the ‘New Release’ section of Spotify and YouTube Music.
- Reading – In this section, you will find ebooks and audiobooks.
- Games – You will start seeing all types of games as titles in the Play Store in this section.
- Food – In this section, you will find restaurants, hotels, and other apps through Google Maps and will also see apps like Swiggy and Zomato.
- Shop – This section shows you active shopping carts, as well as bank offers and deals that you may be interested in.
- Social Media – Here, you will find apps from Reddit, TikTok, Pinterest, Next-door, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.
Google may also add more categories in the future, including custom categories like health and fitness, sports, travel, events, and dating. This is expected to be part of Google’s expansion into the entertainment space and Android TV. In addition, Google has asked many third-party apps to un-silo their contacts so that there is no siloing available through the app.
However, the last time Google did this was in 2012 with Google Now, which broke data siloing and put it into a consistent and familiar interface. This new move has made the device a bit more nimble and easier to accommodate new features. Also, Google Play is rolling out this new collection in the US starting today.
