To control this smartphone plastic garbage, EU (European Union) lawmakers are now setting standard long-term software support for all the smartphone companies doing business in the EU. According to the report of 9to5google, A draft regulation currently on the table in the EU looks to establish “ecodesign requirements for mobile phones, cordless phones, and slate tablets.”

This inspiration for making regulations is to control the increase of e-waste day by day. Because users upgrade their smartphones for newer software support and older smartphone become e-garbage.

According to the commission, this new regulation will extend the lifespan of smartphones from 2-3 years to 5 five years. So that users did not switch or upgrade their smartphones for the greediness of at least newer software version features. OPPO ColorOS 13 Based On Android 13 Version Rollout Timeline [September]

According to this regulation and 9to5google report, the company has to provide at least three years of a major update and five years of security patch updates for every smartphone for doing business in the EU. It is expected that this will surely boost control of some amount of e-waste and extend the life span of many devices.

As we stated above, the Google Pixel 6 has fulfilled every possible requirement exactly the EU needs it. As you know, previously, it was not like this; its updating policy was also the same as other smartphone manufacturers.

Like Samsung provide four major update and five years of security patch update for its galaxy smartphone series, OnePlus and other companies like Xiaomi, VIVO, OPPO, and more still offers only three year of major update and four years of security patch update, and that too depends on their smartphone variant and segments, if any of the companies included here smartphone is from budget phone or affordable or entry-level segment then companies offers only 1 or 2 years of major and security patch update and some for smartphones there is no timeline for receiving the update, in this case, many smartphone users upgrade their smartphone to new and latest software version. Read more OnePlus Nord Watch is Coming Soon; The Design Revealed
