A couple of days ago, Google officially launched its payment service, Google Wallet, in India to make all your payments and transactions easier, secure, and more convenient. However, the Wallet is currently available only for Android owners. Meanwhile, Google has announced that the company is raising the minimum required OS version for Wallet on Android phones and Wear OS, mentioning security as its prominent reason.

Google Wallet requires Android 9 or higher, while Google Wallet requires Wear OS 2.x or higher

According to Google’s support page, the company is making a significant change to the minimum required OS version on Android devices and Wear OS, with security being the primary driver. This means that starting from June 10, Google Wallet will require Android 9.0 or higher, and Wear OS 2. x or higher on your smartwatches. Google has emphasized that this update is crucial for enhancing the security of your transactions, providing you with a more secure and reliable payment experience.

It’s important to note that Google Wallet will not be functional on Android devices running below version 9. This means that devices running on Android Nougat and Oreo, specifically versions 7.0/7.1 and 8.0/8.1, will be affected. However, for those using Wear OS 2 on smartwatches, which was initially based on Android 8.0 Oreo but later updated to Android 9.0 Pie, the transition should be seamless.

Rest assured, Google has made it clear that the arrival of Google Wallet is not being replaced. In fact, Google Play services continue to power both Google Pay and Wallet, ensuring a seamless transition and uninterrupted service for our users.
