Google has been evolving its Android operating system, with each version bringing new features, refinements, and improvements. Android 15 is rolling out to some devices, and now Android 16 is also being worked on, so users can expect the latest version soon.
Android 16 Launch Schedule
Google may launch Android 16 in the second quarter of 2025. Over the past few weeks, several comments in Google’s AOSP have suggested that 25Q2 will be the next major release of Android. The first comment was left on the patch that adds a minimum Linux kernel version requirement to “Android W.” It can be specified that these have been used to refer to Android 16, and the codename “Baklava” has also been referred to in several places.
However, Google changes the date of its latest Android rollout every year, which confirms that the brand may roll out Android 16 in the second quarter of next year. The brand may also introduce the new Android sooner due to better tolling, more robust infrastructure, and improvements in platform architecture. Google has developed new Android versions over the years, making them easier to test and distribute.
Earlier this year, Google revealed that its Android developers are working on a single, unified internal’main’ branch, and it will determine which features and APIs are enabled. On the other hand, Google also mentioned 21Q1, 22Q2, 23Q3, etc., for all its Android releases, which confirms when the new version is going to arrive.
All these references have been discovered by developer TeamB58 in the CDD with ’25Q2,’ which makes it clear that there will be a major release of Android next in 25Q2.
The decision to change the codename to ‘Baklava’ may be taken after this release. The latest version will come in 25Q2/Android W. Thus, the Android 16 release reference in AOSP 2 and AOSP 3 is confirmed in 25Q2. This Q2 can be seen in April, May, and June. This release could be seen in next year’s Pixel phones, which would include the Google Pixel 9 series.
