The floating bottom bar was added to Google Chat about a year ago, and now it has been updated with a Material U to make the design change. These changes are aimed at improving the user experience and making navigation easier. It also represents a thoughtful evolution at the time of using this app.
Google Chat adds more Material You
Earlier, the Floating bar used to have a circle that helped identify the feed. Now, it will be changed to a pill-shaped tab indicator that will make this bar a bit wider. This design will also allow the user to see the left and right corners of the profile picture and the time/date of sending the message.
The container background is themed with dynamic colours instead of indicator and FAB, allowing the user to customize many other colours. This new feature makes the screen look different than before. Apart from this, AI has also been added to it, and Google has shown this new design as part of the Gemini summary, which comes from the home view of the chat.
On mobile, users get three bullet points for unread conversations, while on the desktop web, conversations get a “Summarize” button. This works for group conversations and unread messages in Spaces. Additionally, Google is rolling out paid add-ons for Google Workspace that will include Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education premium, AI Meeting, and Messaging.
