Android Brings Three New Anti-Theft Features to Smartphones
Google has announced three new anti-theft features at I/O 2024 because the security of their devices has become a priority for users. The security of devices is becoming increasingly important with the growing amount of sensitive data.
These three new anti-theft features are being introduced to protect users from theft, unauthorized access and loss of control over their devices. These features include theft detection lock, offline device lock and remote lock. Here is the full information about the features –
Theft Detection Lock
A theft detection lock is an intelligent feature that detects suspicious behaviour or activity by leveraging sensors and AI-based algorithms. It can also indicate that the device is being stolen. It is one of three new anti-theft features which works by monitoring activities and patterns. Some implementations also send notifications to the owner’s other devices, giving them a real-time alert of theft.
Offline Device Lock
Offline device lock addresses the common challenge of keeping a device secure when not connected to the internet. Most modern security features, such as remote locking or data wiping, require the device to be online. Offline device lock relies on locally stored encryption keys or biometric data to lock the device after a set period of inactivity or when the device is turned off and on again.
This feature recognizes unauthorized passwords, PINs, fingerprints, or faces, even offline, to prevent strangers from accessing the device’s content. This feature is also helpful in travel situations where the internet can not be accessed. It also provides security even when the device is web-connected.
Remote Lock
Remote lock allows users to lock their devices remotely. This feature is also designed for scenarios where the user has lost their device. Remote Lock is activated through a cloud service or an app connected to the device’s operating system, which can also use Find my device and Find my iPhone.
According to tipster Mishal Rahman, three new anti-theft features arrived as beta in Brazil in August, and these features are also spotted on the Xiaomi 14T Pro in the US, but it does not get a Remote lock. The Google has also started rolling out these features to Android 10 and other devices through Google Play Services updates. By the end of this year, the final versions will be widely distributed. Android’d three new anti-theft features are going to be available to devices with version 24.40.33.
