Google Adds Android Earthquake Alerts Feature In US

Google expanded its earthquake alert system for Android with numerous features. The system uses crowd-sourced earthquake technology to provide early earthquake warnings to everyone. It will also help in providing relief to affected areas and will cover all countries.

These safety-alternative warnings can protect people from natural disasters and emergency situations, which can also help a lot in terms of security. The system is being expanded to cover the 50 US states and 6 US territories and will be fully rolled out in the coming weeks.

The brand has partnered with the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES), and the ShakeAlert system to provide Android earthquake alerts feature in California, Oregon, and Washington for this feature. However, these alerts rely on traditional seismometers to detect earthquakes, which are capable of giving accurate information.

In areas where seismometers cannot be used, this will be extended through the accelerometers in Android phones. Android earthquake alerts feature will potentially provide life-saving information to people in every state. You can also get other information about it by searching in Google; you just have to search “earthquake near me.”.

This technology is already being used to provide alerts in 97 other countries, and if an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or greater occurs, two types of warning alerts will be sent to your phone:

“Beware” alert indicates weak or mild shaking, giving you advance information to prepare for possible stronger shaking.

“Take Action” alert: This alert indicates that moderate to severe shaking is expected and prompts you to take immediate action to protect yourself.”

Google further says that the Android earthquake alerts feature will be turned on by default on the device, and you need to go to the device’s Android Settings > Security and Emergency > tap on the earthquake alerts and finally, Location and then Advanced; it will be enabled for earthquake alerts. According to your choice, you can disable it later.
