Under Meta’s management, Threads is presenting itself as a serious competitor to X/Twitter’s hegemony in the microblogging space. In an effort to improve user experience, the platform is introducing a number of new features. To add an extra degree of anonymity, the first feature lets users hide their likes and share numbers. Similar to Instagram’s 2021 release of a similar function, users can choose to activate it for certain posts or opt into the feature by default.

Alessandro Paluzzi, a reverse engineer, revealed that Threads is developing a post-saving functionally in another development. By allowing users to store content for later use, this feature could distinguish Threads from other similar offerings. Furthermore, a post-date experiment is now in progress, which could show the post’s real date instead of just the amount of weeks that have passed since it was posted.

By strategically introducing these features, Threads hopes to draw in more users and threaten X’s dominant position in the microblogging space. X has been dealing with an increasing amount of uncertainty, particularly in light of Elon Musk’s contentious tenure after acquiring the platform. The advances that are taking place in Threads point to a competitive push to change the microblogging science and maybe change the dynamics of user preferences.

After going over the essentials, it’s important to note that the first feature in this lineup has been formally released. With the ability to hide their likes and share numbers at will, users feel empowered by this function. This feature shows it’s worth it, potentially improving privacy and giving consumers more flexibility over how visible their engagement data are.
